The history of Høgskolen Betanien

Betanien opened its own nursing school in Kalfaret, Bergen on October 1, 1923. Prior to 1908, all Betanien sisters were educated in Kristiania (Oslo), but this year marked the beginning of a new era. Betanien in Bergen began offering nursing education in collaboration with Bergen Municipal Hospital at Engen.

The school's education began with basic training for nurses. Initially, the nurses' education was shorter than the deaconess education, lasting only one year. This resulted in the possibility of graduating more nurses in a shorter time.

Over time, the school expanded its course offerings and also offered further education for nurses in specialized areas such as aging and elderly care, cancer nursing, as well as national paramedic education for ambulance personnel.

On October 21, 1975, Betanien moved to Fyllingsdalen, marking a new chapter in the school's development.
