The course is designed to develop students’ ability to think critically related to global health nursing, international health, international guidelines, and policy. Students will expand their theoretical knowledge and, together with the interdisciplinary and intercultural team of students and course leaders, analyse different perspectives on global health challenges and develop approaches to possible responses and problem-solving.

During this course you will develop knowledge and understanding of existing and emerging international public health priorities from a global perspective.

Main subjects

• Health promotion and prevention, paying particular attention to trends in the burden of infectious and non-communicable diseases
• Global health nursing provided in specific challenging situations, e.g., environmental disasters and emergencies, conflict zones, and refugee situations
• Global nurse roles, priorities, and responsibilities regarding health disparities, human rights, and emerging global health issues
• Roles and responsibilities of nurses in achieving Sustainable Development Goals and WHO’s global action plans

Work and Teaching Methods

• Lectures and seminars: 5 hours
• Student activities, presentations/flipped classroom: 10 hours
• Scope of Self-Study Activities: 120 hours

The teaching is based on a problem-oriented and collaborative approach to learning in which the assigned tasks provide opportunities for the student to take active responsibility for their learning.

This is a hybrid/online elective two-week course of 5 ects. The course is offered as an intensive week-long course with three days of lectures and seminars. The remaining one week is assigned to the home exam.

The course will be in English, and is open for Norwegian and international students. The course lasts for two weeks.
