Course Content
This course discusses and defines the subject area of the PhD program in “Diaconia, Values and Professional Practice” asresearch field. It presents and connects central theoretical and conceptual approaches to the study of professional practice, including diaconal practice, in health care and social/welfare services in public sector, civil society, churches and other social purpose organisations. A central question is how the understanding of diaconia, values and professional practice can be understood with different disciplinary glasses and how they overlap or are intertwined. Particular attention is given to practitioners’ encounters with increasingly complex life-worlds, knowledge landscapes and value dilemmas from individual, collective and societal perspectives.

The work will consist of a combination of lectures and student activities through discussions, presentations of and responding to PhD projects

Pre-course reading:
It is recommended that participants are familiar with relevant literature and eventually digital presentations before the course starts
Pre-course paper:
Participants are required to submit a written text ahead of the course, approximately 800 words. The text must describe the PhD project of the candidate, reflecting the relation to the course theme. Participants are also required to respond to the text of fellow students and to take part in group discussions.
Deadline for submitting a 800 word abstract is 02.03.2025 (see work requirements).
Assessment:
After the course, the student must submit a written essay of 3.000 words +/- 10 % (ca. 10 pages). The essay should reflect and discuss the candidate’s ongoing PhD project in relation to Diaconia, Values and Professional Practice. Both a satisfactory course attendance (minimum 75 %) and an approved essay are necessary to obtain the 10 ECTS.
