As a deacon, you are a bridge-builder between the church and the community. Diaconia is often explained as the caring service of the church. You get the opportunity to work closely with people of different ages and life situations.

  • What does a deacon do?

    The role of a deacon is about being a support for those who need it most. Whether it is offering care to the sick, comfort to the grieving, or assistance to those facing various challenges in life. Deacons work in the local community and often collaborate with the public sector or with volunteer organizations.

  • How to become a deacon?

    There are different ways of becoming a deacon. At VID, you can become a deacon by first obtaining a bachelor's degree in social work, nursing, or care work. Afterward, you can pursue a master's degree in diaconia. You can also take a master's degree in diaconia if you have a teaching background. The master's degree can be taken full-time or part-time. In the master's degree, you will gain insight into how the church and diaconal institutions can meet social challenges.

  • How does a deacon work?

    Deacons can work in various settings and organizations. Many deacons work in the church or other religious institutions, but you can also work in social health services, healthcare and elderly care or volunteer organizations.
