From the 6th to the 13th of October I was on a staff exchange with Erasmus+ Global Mobility to the University of Western Cape (UWC), South Africa. It was a week filled with impressions, teaching, learning, and building relationships—both professional and personal.
The UWC is located just outside of Cape Town. It has 23000 students and 2400 staff, with several faculties and centres. I was a guest at the Department of Religion and Theology and was hosted by colleague Tiana Bosman. The UWC has a strong social commitment, visible to both students and staff. I got to know the university campus, had meetings about international exchange with staff and students, gave a lecture, and participated in classes.
Reports after the week from the UWC indicate that there is great enthusiasm among the students to apply for exchange to VID!
I also partook in a meeting between the department, faculty and international office of the UWC on the one hand, and the Department of Theology and the International Office of Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná in Brazil on the other hand, opening up vistas for expanding exchange partners. In addition, Bosman took me on tours to show me the socio-economic and geographical context from which the students came, and I learnt a lot about the history and society of South Africa and of the UWC; we also discussed pedagogical challenges and dilemmas. Finally, I should mention that the week also included a launch in Stellenbosch of a Festschrift to Knut Holter; the launch included participants from many locations in Africa, Europe and beyond.
Many thanks to VID, especially Maria Tendenes, and to the UWC, especially Tiana Bosman, for making this exchange possible. I hope I will have more opportunities to go on an exchange and encourage all staff and students to do the same!
