The event kicked off with a talk with Silje Rydland, who shared stories from her exchange program in Madagascar. She highlighted their impactful project on teaching sewing skills to make reusable sanitary pads, enabling young girls to continue attending school during menstruation.
Following Rydland's presentation, attendees heard from Ashlyn Estes and Austin Barrera, visitors from Azusa Pacific University in the USA. They shared their positive experiences in Norway, expressing gratitude for the warm welcome they received and particularly praising the access to fresh seafood.
The event also featured a presentation from the Norwegian Church Abroad (Sjømannskirken), detailing their global work and the locations of their churches. They provided information about their emergency number app, and highlighting their readiness to assist in urgent situations.
A Q&A session concluded the event, with a student ambassador fielding questions about exchange opportunities. Topics included the duration and cost of exchange programs as well as the overall experience of studying abroad.
Many attendees lingered after the session, eager to engage further with representatives from Sjømannskirken and the international coordinators. The event's success has sparked excitement for the next International Afternoon.
The event was sponsored by funds VID received after being named the Erasmus Institution of the Year in 2022 by the Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills (HK-dir). Additionally, it was supported by VID’s Sustainable Student Mobility in Nursing Education project, slated for launch in 2024 through HK-dir funding.
