About the project
My PhD is an empirical study on parents with immigrant backgrounds parenting teenagers.
The study investigates how the parents' surroundings influences their parenthood, what kind of support they need in their parenthood from their local surroundings, and how the welfare services can strengthen them as parents. To understand families’ needs, I am exploring the socio-cultural contexts where parenting processes are conducted and how social and material conditions, neighbourhood characteristics, and family dynamics interact with parenting practices.
The study has an exploratory design and qualitative is used to investigate and interpret the meaning parents attach to their experiences of parenthood. The empirical material is collected in two phases; 1) Three group interviews with mothers with a Somali background, parenting teenagers and 2) participatory observations in a parental guidance course, where the participants had children of different ages, about half of them teenagers. They had a background from Somalia, Syria, Iraq, Pakistan, Vietnam, and Morocco. Researchers' log done during the research process is included in the material
