Approval and recognition of earlier courses
If the course or courses you have previously completed are considered to be similar to parts of your current programme of study in terms of academic content, level and scope, the course(s) will be recognized as part of your current study programme.
In order for the faculty to assess your application, all of your submitted documents must be in PDF format. We do not accept links or images. Below you will find information on how to apply.
1. Complete the application form:
- You must specify which courses from the external institution you wish to have recognized, and which of the VID courses these will replace.
2. Attach the following documents in PDF format:
- Programme description, course descriptions and learning outcomes that applied when you took the course(s) in question.
- Reading list
- If the institution you studied at is not part of the results exchange system, you must attach a stamped and signed transcript of your grades.
3. Send the completed application form and attachments to post@vid.no or by post to
- VID vitenskapelige høgskole
- PB 184 Vinderen
- 0319 Oslo
- NORWAY
Spring: 1 February
Autumn: 15 September
You will normally receive a response within four weeks. If the faculty requires additional documentation to process your application, it may be longer.
You must remain registered as a student and attend mandatory classes while waiting for an answer.
If your application is not approved, your response will include an explanation.
If your application is approved, you will not need to undertake the relevant course in your study programme and will be exempt from classes and exams in that course. Accredited qualifications will be marked as ‘recognized’ on your diploma.
For a bachelor's or master's degree, you must complete at least 60 ECTS credits at VID, including a thesis.
Note that VID does not normally grant exemptions for parts of a course.
If you are granted an exemption for an entire academic year, this does not give you an automatic right to progress directly to the next academic year.
Tuition fees and semester fees must be paid in full while waiting for a response to your application. If you are granted an exemption for all courses in a semester, only the semester fee is payable. Contact the Division for Academic and Student Affairs for reimbursement of the tuition fees.
The Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund (Lånekassen) calculates your student support based on your ECTS credits. If your application for course recognition is approved, you will produce fewer credits than expected. You must notify the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund that your scope of study has been reduced, otherwise they may think that you are not progressing as expected in your studies.
