Content of the study programme
The continuing education programme focuses on principles, methods, frameworks and service provision in the evaluation, care, nursing and treatment of elderly people with dementia and mental disorders in institutions and living at home. Person-centred care and activity therapy, including involvement and interaction with service users and their families, as well as volunteers, form a core part of this study programme. Students will receive training in how to use and evaluate various screening tools and how to interpret the results in the context of neuropsychiatric symptoms, pain and behavioural disorders. There will also be a focus on the legal framework, ethical reflection and moral treatment choices in challenging clinical situations.
The County Governor has approved grants to cover tuition fees for up to 40 priority applicants employed in Østfold.
Organization of the study programme
The continuing education programme in dementia and mental disorders in the elderly is organized as a campus-based, decentralized, part-time study programme. This corresponds to 800 student input hours spread over a variety of activities covering two semesters.
The study programme has a practice-oriented approach, with skills training based on the students’ own work experience in dementia care and geriatric psychiatry. Two three-day and one four-day on-campus sessions will be held each semester. The content will alternate between teacher-led teaching/lectures and work in teacher-led skill groups. In the skill groups, students will be given the opportunity to practise and develop their skills. This will either take the form of the student working on their own patient cases under supervision, training how to use screening tools, the use of roleplay, simulation or other student-active learning methods. Credits attained in the study programme can be counted towards a Master’s degree. Candidates who attain 30 ECTS credits from continuing education studies can apply to transfer these to VID’s Master’s degree in Service Development for the Elderly.

Organization of studies
