Bachelor of social studies

Do you want to get a better understanding of the society we live in, both locally and internationally? This Bachelor’s degree in Social Science will prepare you for many exciting and varied tasks in working life.

Learning outcomes

Through this study you will learn about human interaction and how we humans organize the society around us. How does globalization change how we interact? How does the relationship between the rich and the poor in the world develop? How does migration change everyday life and working life in Norway?

The degree contains courses such as:

International migration
Multicultural leadership

Structure of the study programme

The degree has two different paths:

Migration
Religion

Migration has a focus on the relationship between multicultural Norway and the global changes that affect the working environment and societies.

Religion focuses mainly on the role of religion within the global changes that affect the working environment and societies.

The lectures in parts of the programme are mandatory and require 70 % attendance.

Studies abroad

In January, students travel to Africa or Asia for a four-week study trip. The trip is part of the African and Asian religion and culture studies course. Students will attend lectures at a university in the exchange country, get to know local students, carry out fieldwork and participate in a variety of interesting excursions. They will also see first-hand the culture and traditions of the country, while having great, new experiences.

During the third year, students can study abroad for a semester through one of the exchange agreements with partner universities. VID has exchange opportunities in places like Stockholm, Nitra (Slovakia), Bilbao and Budapest, among others.

Work possibilities

Do you want to work within refugee integration? How about working in voluntary organizations with a global focus?

Several institutions, both in the public and private sector, have a demand for competence related to our new multicultural living. With a Bachelor’s degree in Social Science from VID, you will serve as a resource in these settings.

The Bachelor's degree provides the basis for admission to several Master's degrees, and with two years of relevant practice students can apply for a Master’s degree in Intercultural Work and a Master’s degree in Social Work at VID.
