Kebra Nagast (Glory of Kings) is one of the greatest literary works from Ethiopia, having been read, venerated, and studied during the last 700 years. It does not delimit itself to describing kings; two women featuring in this work, are Makǝda, also known as the queen of Sheba, and Judith/Gudit, queen of Aksum. In today’s researcher’s lunch, VID’s associate professor Girum Zeleke analyses the role of these two women in Kebra Nagast from feminist perspectives. How do they negotiate power and authority in a patriarchal setting?
