Academic profile

Mari Refve Furuhaug is a Ph.D. student at VID Specialized University under the Center of Mission and Global Studies. The title of her Ph.D.-project is "Forming Democratic citizens in a Diverse Society - the paradox of common reference framework and (individual) belonging". The project lies within the interrelated disciplines of intercultural education and citizenship with action research as the methodological approach. The project aims to investigate how citizenship education (medborgerskap) can be taught through religious education and civics and how common reference frameworks can influence the pupil diversity's road of being formed as democratic citizens. Mari also holds an Erasmus Mundus Master's degree in Migration and Intercultural Relations from the University in Oldenburg, Germany. In her master thesis she wrote about factors that influence internal mobility patterns in the case of environmental displacement to Dhaka, Bangladesh, based on fieldwork in Dhaka. She also has a degree as a secondary school teacher (class 5.-10.) from the University of Stavanger, Norway.
