Data classification

The project leader is responsible for ensuring all data are correctly classified based on their sensitivity and are processed and stored in accordance with their classification. Open or freely available (Green), Restricted (Yellow), In confidence (Red), and Strictly in confidence (Black).

🟢 Green (open) data

It will cause no harm if this data becomes known. These data can be available to the public.

  • Completely anonymous data
  • Literature search documentation
  • Publicly available government documents

🟡 Yellow (restricted) data

It could cause limited harm (e.g., to participants, VID, or public interests) if these data become known to unauthorized individuals. These data should not be open to everyone and must have controlled access rights.

  • Data sets containing non-sensitive personal data
  • Unpublished research material
  • Texts and pictures under copyright

🔴 Red (in confidence) data

It could cause harm (e.g., to participants, VID, or public interests) if these data become known to unauthorized individuals, and/or VID is obliged to have strong protections on this data by law, agreements, and other regulations. These data should have strict access rights.

  • All special categories of personal data, e.g.: health data, ethnicity, political opinions, religious or philosophical beliefs, sex life, criminal offences
  • Information that could cause participant to lose their job

âš« Black (in strict confidence) data

It could cause considerable harm (e.g., to participants, VID, or public interests) if these data become known to unauthorized individuals. Special circumstances make it necessary to protect the data even more.

  • Large quantities of sensitive personal data
  • Large quantities of health-related data
  • Research data that is of great financial or commercial value
