This project aims at studying one of the passages of Pauline Epistles: 1 Corinthians 11:17-34. The main aim/objective of this study is to get insight about the Lord's Supper, in general, and to find out the meaning of discerning the body in v. 29b and its significance in 1 Corinthians 11:17-34, in particular.
In his Epistles, Paul addresses different occasional problems that affected the believing community of his day. In 1Corinthians, he is addressing certain ethical and theological problems seen among Corinthians. In verses 17-34 of the chapter 11, he discusses the theme of the Lord's Supper that was misperceived by the Corinthians. In his discussion, he censures believers about eating and drinking without discerning the body (v 29b). The meaning of the term body in this verse is ambiguous. It is given different meanings by New Testament (NT) scholarship: as sacramental, as ecclesiastical, and both as sacramental and ecclesiastical body. Application of the prescriptive reading, as I do assume, to this verse may be a big challenge in the interpretation and understanding of the term. Thus, this study engages into the discussion of this verse in the NT scholarship by using higher criticism as a main method to attain the meaning. This study assumes that locating the text in its physical/logical and historical contexts will help to achieve the goal of the study.
