The lecture investigates possibilities for preaching from the Book of Ruth to mobilize contemporary faith communities into diaconal action. It offers a critical analysis of sermon guidelines in light of a close reading of the ancient text. The lecture is a hybrid event sponsored by VID's research group CollECT (Colloquium on Epistemology, Context, and Text, in Biblical Interpretation).

Dr. Tiana Bosman is lecturer at Department of Religion and Theology at the University of the Western Cape, Cape Town, South Africa. Her PhD is in Biblical Languages with a focus on Ancient Hebrew and the understanding of the semantic domain of affection in the Old Testament. Her field of specialization is the translation and interpretation of Old Testament texts. Before her appointment at UWC, she lectured at the University of Stellenbosch, was appointed as Bible translator for Libronix as well as the Bible Society of South Africa, and served as a minister in the Dutch Reformed Church.

The research group CollECT’s aspires to create an environment for innovative biblical studies. Our particular focus is on the roles different epistemologies and interpretive contexts play both in popular and critical biblical interpretation.
