The course gives PhD students working with different types of texts a thorough introduction to relevant scholarly approaches to reading and interpretation of texts.

The course gives PhD students working with different types of texts a thorough introduction to relevant scholarly approaches to reading and interpretation of texts.

The course addresses potentials and challenges of reading and interpreting texts as historical artefacts and from contemporary experiences and concerns. There will be a particular focus on intercultural, interreligious and emancipatory interpretative perspectives.

The course has the following main focus areas:

  • Text theory: what is a text, different types of texts
  • Different approaches to text analysis
  • Hermeneutical theory: classical hermeneutics, critical hermeneutics/hermeneutics of suspicion, intercultural and interreligious hermeneutics
  • Postcolonial theory

13-15 February 2023, Campus Stavanger

Teaching and compulsory activities

The course is offered as an intensive course week with with 3 days of asynchronic lectures, synchronic seminars and workshopas. Students are required to submit both pre-coursework and post-coursework.

Assessment

Submission of post-course work: essay, 3000 words (+/- 10%)

The deadline for submitting the post-course work during spring 2023 is 15 March.

Opptakskrav

  • PhD students who are enrolled in one of VID’s PhD programmes. PhD students from VID register for the course in Studentweb and have their own deadline for registration. PhD students from VID receive notification from their PhD centre when the course opens for registration.
  • PhD students from other institutions. PhD students from other institutions than VID must file their application by pressing the orange button at the bottom of the page.
  • PhD students from other institutions must submit written documentation of their enrollment together with the application. External applicants will receive notification about whether they are admitted to the course after the application deadline has passed.
