John Owen’s Pastoral Theology and Methodology
september 2016–september 2019
I am exploring the pastoral theology and methodology of the seventeenth century English Puritan John Owen. While Owen's works have been studied largely for their theological, academic, or political contributions to reformed scholasticism in the early modern period, I am examining his writings to find out what he believed about local church pastoral ministry and whether or not his practice measured up to his own beliefs. This analysis involves understanding Owen's use of medieval and reformed scholastic categories as well as placing Owen's use of theological terms within its proper seventeenth century context. My belief is that exploring Owen's pastoral theology and methodology will both open up a neglect aspect of his ministry that was actually at the centre of his life and work, and provide helpful material for pastoral ministry in today's setting as well.
