Sin, purification and sacrifice: An investigation into the text of Leviticus and its worldviews, and relating this to Malagasy culture
august 2009–desember 2017
In this thesis, I examine why the Malagasy Christians readily embrace the book of Leviticus. My hypothesis is that there are some similarities between the worldviews underlying the book of Leviticus and the Malagasy worldviews. To do so, I study three blocks of texts from Leviticus and compare the worldviews underlying them with some of the Malagasy worldviews. These texts are: (1) Leviticus 4–5, where I study the concept of sin and guilt and their relating purification sacrifices and compare them with the malagasy concept of blame and retaliation known as tsiny and tody; (2) the post-partum purification in Leviticus 12 is compared with the Malagasy ritual purification of parturient and (3) I also study the Day of Atonement in Leviticus 16 and compare it with the Annual Royal Bath rituals performed at the celebration of the Traditional Malagasy New Year.
