Access to e-resources
The library provides staff and students at VID with access to many e-resources, such as e-books, e-journals and different types of databases. Sometimes you can access e-resources directly, other times you need to sign in.
How do I sign in?
When you're being forwarded to sign-in for one of VID's e-resources you will be prompted to sign in to your Microsoft account. As a staff member or student, you have your own Microsoft account connected to your VID user. You use the username and password for this VID user to sign in to e-resources:
When do I have to sign in?
When you're connected to Internet via VID's network, you will automatically get access to most e-resources without having to sign in first. This will for example be the case when you're using the Eduroam network on campus.
When you're not on VID's network, you need to sign in to get access to many of the e-resources. This will for example be the case if you're trying to access e-resources from home. VID is using a sign-in solution called OpenAthens.
Access via browser extension
LibKey Nomad is a browser extension that automatically locates and links to full text content for articles that you find online, provided they are included in the library's subscriptions or are available as open access.
Choose VID as your institution after installation, in the extension settings in your browser. After that, the extension will scan pages that you visit to see if the content is available in full text and, if that's the case, provide a direct link. If the university doesn't have full text access you will be provided with a link to Oria, where you can request the article from the library.
How to install LibKey Nomad:
- Edge - download from Company Portal/Firmaportalen on your work computer (for staff members) or via the page Edge Add-ons (Microsoft)
- Chrome (Chrome Web Store)
- Safari (App Store)
For user guidance, please refer to the LibKey Nomad User Guide from the product provider, Third Iron.
Access by searching for DOI or PMID
In LibKey.io, you can search by DOI or PMID to see if VID has access to the article you're looking for. You must first select VID as your organization within LibKey.io. If VID does not have access, you will be given the option to request the article through Oria.
Access through full-text check in databases
Sometimes you will find only a reference or an abstract of the article when you search in a database, without full-text access. Therefore, several databases have a link or button that allows you to check if VID has access to the full text in another database. The link/button appears in the search results list or on the page with the article abstract.
- Look for a link/button that says [Check for Full Text at VID] or [VID Full Text] – the wording and appearance vary somewhat from database to database.
- When you click on the link/button, it checks for full-text access for VID across databases. If VID has access, a link to the full text will be displayed.
- If VID does not have access, you will be given the option to request the article through Oria.
This function is particularly relevant when searching in bibliographic databases like Scopus or PubMed. You can also use the link/button when you search in a full-text database and find an article to which you do not have access. Even if access is lacking in the database you are searching in, there is still a possibility that VID has full-text access to the article in another database.
Creating links to e-resources
You can create links to e-resources (such as articles) by using the link generator for VID. When the end user clicks on the link, they will be forwarded to sign-in, where they can sign in to access the resource (providing VID has access).
Contact
Please contact the library if you have any questions about logging in or if you have problems accessing e-resources.
