How to use Oria

Oria is a search portal that you can use to find VID's print and electronic resources.

You can find books, articles, journals, databases and more in Oria. If you log on, you can also request materials, place holds and renew your loans. It's also possible to search the collections of other Norwegian academic libraries.

The guide below gives an introduction to the most important functionality for students and staff members at VID. Sikt provides a general search guide for Oria (not specific to VID) that explains more of the available functionality. The system provider ExLibris offers a comprehensive guide to Primo (Oria).

Signing in and getting access

Why and how to sign in?

Once you've signed in to Oria, you can:

  • request materials and make reservations
  • save your searches and set up notifications
  • get an overview of your loans and your requests
  • renew your loans

The sign-in link is located in the right corner of the top menu in Oria.

You use your Feide user credentials to sign in if you're a student or staff member at VID.

[My Account] and personal details

In [My Account] in Oria, you'll find an overview of your loans and requests. This is where you can renew your loans.

You can see your personal details (phone number, e-mail address and so forth) registered for your user as well. If you're a student and wish to edit your personal details, you can make the changes in Studentweb. This applies to (for example) preferred campus/pick-up library, address and e-mail address. Any changes you make in Studentweb will have effect the following day.

[My Account] is located under [Menu] in Oria.

You use your Feide credentials to sign in, if you're a student or staff member at VID.

Signing in to e-resources

Signing in to Oria won't give you read access to e-resources (articles, e-books, databases etc.). When you follow a link from Oria to an e-resource that requires authentication, you'll automatically be routed to a designated sign-in service for this purpose. If you're a student or staff member at VID, you must sign in with the username and password for your VID user. External users do not have access to VID's e-resources.

For more information, please refer to the page Access to e-resources.

Finding books

Finding the book in Oria

If you're looking for a specific book, you need to know either:

  • the title, as precise as possible (if you search for "nursing" you'll get a great many hits)
  • the author, both first and last name if possible (if you simply search for "Hanson" you'll get too many hits)

If you search according to the instructions above, you have a good chance of finding the book you're looking for.

Finding the shelf in the library

Under [Get It] on the page of the book in Oria, there's information that will guide you to the right shelf in the library. It also gives you information about whether the book is available for borrowing:

[Get It] - screen shot from Oria, showing if the book is owned by the library, if it's available, and the location of the book in the library.

It shows which VID library(s) has the book:

You can also see how long you can borrow the book for:

[Get It] - screen shot from Oria, showing how long time you can borrow a book for

Finally, there is the call number - where the book is located in the library. You need the full number to find the book on the shelf, for example 808.066 Dal (numbers and letters):

[Get It] - screen shot from Oria, showing the call number of a book

This is the number you look for when you go to the library to find the book. Each book shelf in the library is marked with call numbers.

NB: The call number for a book may vary from library to library:

[Get It] - screen shot from Oria, showing that the call number for a book can be different depending on where (at what library) the book is located

This library has 13 copies of this book for 2-week loans, but only 2 are currently available:

You can click on the different locations for more information about the specific copies:

Renewals, holds and requests

Renewing loans

You can renew your loans in [My Account]. Once you've tried to renew, you can see if the renewal was successful. If it wasn't, you need to return the book to the library. Not all loans can be renewed, for example 1 day loans and loans that are requested by other patrons.

Open the menu in the top-right corner in Oria and click on [My Account].

[My Account] - screen shot from Oria, accessing [My Account] from the top menu in Oria

You can renew all your loans at the same time on the overview page - click on [Renew All]. All loans that are eligible for renewal will be renewed.

Placing holds on borrowed books

Is the book you want to borrow on loan? Then you can place a hold on it in Oria.

Not all books can be placed on hold. This applies to, for example, 1-day loans and books that have the status [Item in place] at your own campus/pickup library. In case the book is in place (available on the shelf), you need to go to the library and locate and borrow it yourself.

How to place a hold

Find the book you wish to place a hold on. Click [Sign in] if you aren't already signed-in.

[Sign in] - screen shot from Oria, sign-in option on detailed information page in Oria

When you've signed in, the page will be refreshed automatically. Click [Request].

Choose pickup library (=one of the libraries where all copies are currently on loan) in the request form and click [Request].

Your hold is now received and will be handled by the library. You'll get an e-mail/sms when the book is ready for pickup at the library you chose in the request form.

Requesting books the library doesn't have

Doesn't VID have the book you wish to borrow? If you're a student (requesting is available when the book is to be used for larger projects) or staff member, you can request the book from another library in Oria.

If you can't find the book you are searching for in Oria, you can expand your search by choosing [Norwegian Academic Libraries].

Requesting articles the library doesn't have

Do you wish to request an article VID doesn't have access to? If you're a student (requesting is available when the article is to be used for larger projects) or staff member, you can request the article from another library in Oria.

You'll get an e-mail/sms when the book is ready for pickup at the library you chose in the request form. In cases where the license terms permit it, the library will deliver a digital copy (pdf) of the article to you via e-mail.

Scenario 1: when you find the article in Oria

Search in Oria to see if VID has access to the journal article (use words from the citation). If you don't find the article, click on [Include material your institution doesn't have access to]. If you get zero results in Oria, this inclusion will happen automatically.

[Include material your institution doesn't have access to] - screen shot from Oria, expand article search in Oria to other library collections

You will then get more hits. If you find the right article, click on it. (If you cannot find the right article, see Scenario 2 below.) Then click on [Sign in] if you are not already signed in.

Search tips and techniques

When you get to many hits

You can perform a phrase search by enclosing multiple words in quotation marks ("). This way, you limit your search to documents where these words appear together. For example, "sustainable globalization" will yield fewer results than sustainable globalization.

You can refine your search by using the filters available from the results list. You can, for example, refine by material type (article, book, etc.), publication year, language, department (= campus library), author, and subject.

[Tweak My Results] - screen shot from Oria, showing filters for limiting search results

You can also pre-limit to a specific material type by clicking on one of these options under the search field in Oria before you search.

[Articles] - screen shot from Oria, showing how to use buttons below the search field to limit search results to a specific material type

If you want to search for resources only within a specific subject, you can do this by first selecting [Advanced Search] and then [Subject] in the dropdown menu under [Search Filters].

[Advanced Search] - screen shot from Oria, how to enter the advanced search mode

[Search Filters] - screen shot from Oria, showing how to limit search to a specific search in advanced search mode

When you don't get enough hits

If you are not entirely sure about, for example, the title or author's name, you can try truncating the uncertain part of the word and replacing it with an asterisk (*). This will search for all possible endings of the word. For example, lars will yield results for larsen, larsson, and larson.

Similarly, you can replace a letter within or at the end of a word with a question mark (?). This will search for variants of that word. For example, analy?e will yield results for both analyse and analyze.

You can enable the function [Search in Full Text]. This allows you to search the full text of many materials available in Oria. By default, the search does not explore the full text of a material, but rather fields like title, author, abstract, and subject terms.

[Search in Full Text] - screen shot from Oria, showing how to expand search to include results from search inside the full text of digital documents

If you don't get any hits when you search, the search will automatically be expanded to include materials that VID does not have access to (but can potentially request). You can also choose in advance to search this material by enabling the function [Include material your institution doesn't have access to] from the results list.

When you get zero hits

  • Check for spelling errors
  • Try searching with different terms
  • Try searching with fewer terms
  • If you still can't find what you're looking for, you can try requesting the material.
